The Mayan civilization, whose great achievements included a fully developed written language, astronomical systems, and spectacular cities in stone and gold, emerged around 2000 BC with surviving remnants at the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s. Much of what we know about the Maya is preserved in the ruins that remain of their magnificent cities. Images are carved into stone surfaces that record wars, conquests, lineage, rituals, and a 365 day calendar. This project is based on a study of these reliefs.
The principle medium for this project is basic salt dough, along with readily available tools and materials.
